Worldwide place of pilgrimage, Lourdes welcomes five millions visitors a year.
In the year 1858 the young Bernadette Soubirous saw the Blessed Virgin for eighteen times in a grotto in Lourdes.
Sixty-four miraculous recoveries in that cave have been officially recognized by the medical and religious authorities.
Indeed, on 11th of February 1858 the young girl Bernadette Soubirous went to Massabielle grotto to collect kindling and saw the apparition in a cavity of the rock of a “lady” who said later, to her been called “ the immaculate conception “.
The Virgin appeared eighteen times to the young girl of Lourdes and under her wishes and on these sites (called sanctuaries) have been built chapels, basilica, fountains and piscinas around the grotto and its miraculous fountainhead, where thousands of sufferers have come.
